The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers is the only internationally recognized professional body representing Shipbrokers, Ship Managers and agents throughout the world.

With 23 Branches in key shipping areas, 3500 individual and 120 Company Members, Membership of ICS represents a commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards across the shipping industry worldwide.

ICS has a worldwide reputation for the quality and diversity of its educational provision ranging from its Tutorship distance-learning programme to bespoke packages for companies as part of their in-house education programme. The Institute believes that all managers should have a thorough knowledge of the law, insurance, economics etc., so that they can communicate with a specialist professional. ICS sets and examines the syllabus, in consultation with the Shipping Industry, for Membership.

The Qualifying Examinations of the Institute covers a wide spectrum of subjects. Candidates can specialize in any of the following subjects. Dry Cargo Chartering, Ship Management, Ship Sale and Purchase, Tanker Chartering, Liner Trades, Port Agency, Shipping Law, Marine Insurance, Financial and Management Accounting, Multi-Modal Transport & Logistics. It is essential that every candidate specialize at least in two areas. The Institute also grants exemption from appearing in certain papers for those candidates who possess specific educational qualification in the field.

The Institute also awards the Foundation Diploma in Shipping mainly for those candidates who are starting a career in Shipping. The Foundation Diploma helps in gaining basic knowledge in specific aspects of shipping business.
